Altinkum Turkey

Apollo Temple in Didyma, near Altinkum

Altinkum is an emerging beach side resort on the Southern Aegean coast not far from Didyma (Didim in Turkish). The name Altinkum literally translates to 'Golden Sands' and was no doubt given due to it's proximity to three local sandy beaches. The three beaches offer over 1km of long stretches of sand which is uncommon for the normally pebbly Aegean coastline. The beaches gently slope into the sea, giving plenty of shallow water to splash around in and making them ideal for safe family bathing. The usual array of beach activities are available such as inflatable ride, sea bicycles and pedalos. Sun loungers and umbrellas are also available to hire. Fishing trips can be arranged along with scuba dives and leisure boat rides.

Along Altinkum's beachfront are plenty of bars and restaurants (some seafood restaurants) which remain open late into the night. Eating out in Altinkum is good value with a meal for two with drinks costing around £20. Some restaurants will also throw in a free taxi ride back to your accommodation. The local amenities such as doctors surgery, ATMs, banks, internet cafes and supermarkets are all available in Altinkum or in the main town centre of Didyma (Didim in Turkish), a 5-10 minute stroll away.

Although Altinkum is still considered under developed there is a healthy British expat community of a few thousand residents so the locals are used to speaking English.

The nearest airport is at Bodrum which is approximately 1hour 20 minutes drive away. Expect to pay in the region of £35 to £40 taxi fare for transfer to the resort.

A new marina is being developed near Altinkum's third beach. It is expected to opened in the Spring/Summer of 2009. This area is already considered the up market area of Altinkum and the opening of the marina will surely reinforce this reputation.
